Accelerating Air Conditioning Transformation through Enhanced Energy Performance Standards
The project ACT MEPS seeks to institutionalize national standards on green cooling technology in Vietnam and the Philippines. The project started in September 2023 and will proceed until February 2026.
The major part of the substantial energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in Southeast Asia (SEA) is attributed to space cooling. Especially in the ASEAN region the demand for air conditioning is rapidly increasing. Due to these facts, the region holds a distinctive position to pioneer the global shift towards energy-efficient technologies with low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The ACT MEPS project aims to institutionalize standards on a national level in Vietnam and the Philippines with a focus on air-conditioners up to 100,000 Btu/h. To reach these standards the project organizes strategic dialogues with key stakeholders, while also enhancing capacities of partner institutions. In both countries the actual Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) require augmentation, especially for air conditioners surpassing 12kW (41,000 Btu/h). The current dependence on fossil fuel-based energy sources is only one reason why addressing these gaps could substantially curtail emissions. The ACTMPS project is funded by the Clean Cooling Collaborative. The Clean Cooling Collaborative is an international initiative that promotes environmentally friendly cooling technologies.
ACT MEPS consists of the following outcomes:
- Market and Policy Assessment
- MEPS development and adoption
- Coordinated exchange with ASEAN AC industry on ambitious AC MEPS
- Capacity building and testing standards: Support the national enforcement of enhanced AC S&L frameworks through increased testing capacities and PR activities.
