MiemberoGrenada - National Ozone Unit
As part of the Energy Division in Grenada's Ministry of Finance, the National Ozone Unit (NOU) is responsible for the political implementation of the commitments set out in the Montreal Protocol. The NOU's main task is to fulfil Grenada's obligations under the Montreal Protocol. This included the phase-out of chlorufluorocarbons (CFCs) in 2010, which was already achieved in 2006. Grenada is also on a promising path with regard to the phasing out of ozone depleting substances (ODS) such as hydrofluorcarbons (HFCs) regulated under the Kigali Amendment, for which it has repeatedly received much international recognition. This success is mainly due to the concrete measures implemented by the NOU, such as the training of refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) technicians in environmentally friendly technologies that protect the ozone layer, the introduction of a quota system to regulate the importation of ODS and a labelling standard for the safe use, handling and storage of ODS. …
Buenas prácticasSuccess story: Green Cooling labels for refrigerants in Grenada
Since May 2018, the National Ozone Unit (NOU) of Grenada, in cooperation with GIZ Proklima, has been providing Green Cooling stickers to local appliance stores in order to promote the dissemination and use of natural refrigerants on the island state. The initiative created by both project partners supplies local appliance stores with eye-catching green magnetic stickers which are fixed on refrigeration systems with natural refrigerants. As a result, both the distributors and the customer alike are provided with a convenient tool for the promotion and distribution of natural refrigerants, and thus for ozone and climate protection. First piloted with the two companies Courts Grenada Limited (UNICOMER) and L. A. Purcel, the NOU aims to involve more retailers and suppliers and expand the initiative also to air conditioning technologies, with the goal of eventually making Grenada the first f-gas-free Caribbean island. …

Buenas prácticasProject: Refrigerator Energy Efficiency Project
The project “Promoting of Appliance Energy Efficiency and Transformation of the Refrigerating Appliances Market in Ghana” aims at improving the energy efficiency of cooling appliances marketed and used in Ghana. It is funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Green Energy Fund (GEF) and carried out by the Ghanaian Environmental Protection Agency. The project introduces a combination of regulatory tools such as Minimum Energy Performance Standards and Information Labels (S&L), as well as economic tools. Moreover, a Rebate Program encouraging households to replace old but functioning refrigerators with new and efficient ones has been introduced. The Ghanaian Energy Commission offers rebates of up to GH₵ 300 upon the purchase of new, Energy Efficient Labeled refrigerators. The Rebate Program was inaugurated on a pilot basis in 2012 for Accra and Tema, and was scaled up to cover all other regions by the end of 2013. The government of Ghana is providing GH₵ 1million per year for the Rebate Program, and the program will terminate once the funds are exhausted. …

Buenas prácticasProduct: Air-cooled chiller
The GA-2 KO-1-N-200 is a highly efficient air-cooled chiller that produces cold water for industrial processes using the natural refrigerant ammonia (R717). By using high quality components and a natural refrigerant, the chiller achieves an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 4.94. This in turn reduces the operating costs and increases the machine’s lifetime. Moreover, ammonia is characterized by a global warming potential (GWP) of 0, such that it is not affected by the F-Gas regulation and its phase down schedule. By choosing a system that runs on a natural refrigerant without global warming potential (GWP), the consumer is actively contributing to environmentally friendly cooling. Refrigerant: R717 Cooling capacity: 200 kW Energy efficiency rating: EER 4,94 …
Buenas prácticasProduct: 3-in-1 chiller
The chiller GS-1-KO-1-N-102-SP designed by the German Chiller Manufacturer (GCM) uses ammonia (R717) and combines three independently operating machines in one unit. The operator therefore profits from full redundancy; if one of the three machines fails, the remaining two continue to cool. The three machines comprising the GS-1-KO-1-N-102-SP are connected by a master control system, but each machine has its own control center for emergencies. By choosing a system that runs on a natural refrigerant without global warming potential (GWP), the consumer is actively contributing to environmentally friendly cooling. The use of R717 in combination with qualitatively high components ensures that the chiller system has an energy efficiency rating (EER) of 5.56. The investment into the environmentally friendly and economic cooling system was supported with a 20% grant of the total production costs by the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA). Furthermore, the GCM grants a five-year warranty for the cooling system with a maintenance contract upon purchase. Refrigerant: R717 Cooling capacity: 444 kW Energy efficiency rating: EER 5,56 …
