Brazil takes an important step towards implementing the Kigali Amendment

GIZ Proklima participates in a meeting with representatives from the government and Montreal Protocol implementing agencies to kick-off the Kigali Amendment implementation in Brazil.

On 6th of March, representatives from the government, GIZ Proklima, UNDP and UNIDO began the preparatory phase for the implementation of the Kigali Amendment in Brazil. This amendment, complementary to the Montreal Protocol, will be implemented simultaneously with the Brazilian HCFC Phase-Out Management Plan(HPMP), with the aim of reducing the consumption of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in the country between 2026 and 2045.

During the meeting, the progress made duringStage I and II of the HPMP where also highlighted. The third Stage of the Programme will be submitted for approval of the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol during its 94th Meeting to take place in the end of May. The partnership with GIZ Proklima since 2004 has played a crucial role in the success of the Montreal Protocol in Brazil. The National Secretary for Climate Change of the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Ana Toni,  emphasized  the successful collaboration between international implementing agencies and Brazil's ability to reconcile climate and economic issues.

The implementation of the Kigali Amendment, with the support of Ibama and the collaboration of chemists and climate change agents, represents an important milestone and willprevent the emission of 79.5 million tons of CO2eq, making a significant contribution to combating climate change. Ana Toni also stressed the importance to combine the technical, environmental and economic, expressing the desire to inspire other environmental conventions to be implemented as successful as the Montreal Protocol.
