Advancing Energy Efficiency: Insights from Uganda's MEPS Workshop

02.04.2024 , News :

From March 25th to 27th, GIZ Uganda, alongside the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE), and the United Nations Environment Programme, orchestrated a pivotal workshop on the Uganda National Consultations for the East Africa Regional Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for Residential Refrigerators and Room Air Conditioners.

Stakeholders from diverse sectors convened to delve into global best practices and technical expertise in energy efficiency standards. Under the guidance of the UNBS Standards Technical Committee, the workshop facilitated national consultations, fostering the development of a unified national position on MEPS. These sessions served as a platform for stakeholders to voice opinions, raise concerns, and contribute to the formulation of comprehensive and inclusive standards tailored to reflect Uganda's diverse needs and challenges.

Anthony Orit, GIZ Energy Advisor, underscored the pivotal role of energy efficiency in reducing indirect emissions. "Reduction of energy consumption is a crucial initial step in transitioning to sustainable cooling solutions, essential for achieving decarbonization in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector," he emphasized.

The workshop underscored the significance of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainability in cooling, with stakeholders sharing expertise and insights to develop robust MEPS that promote economic development while safeguarding the environment.

Cooling alone accounts for 10% of global energy consumption (UNEP), making MEPS vital policy measures to steer energy efficiency. Enacted through labels, tariffs, and subsidies, MEPS aid consumers in making informed decisions about energy-efficient appliances.

The development of regional MEPS for residential refrigerators and room air conditioners marks a significant milestone in the East African Community's journey towards sustainable cooling. As the region progresses, prioritizing energy efficiency will remain paramount in achieving environmental conservation and economic prosperity.
