Donation of and training on environmentally friendly Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) technologies in Uganda

In July 2024, 17 RAC technicians have been trained on R290 commercial fridges. Furthermore, 12 R600a freezers have been donated to national training centers for further hands-on training.

R290 fridges technician training

The Green Cooling Initiative (GCI III) which is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) has jointly conducted a 5 day training for 17 technicians on Safe Handling of R290 Fridges with the National Ozone Unit of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the Uganda National Association of Refrigeration and Air conditioning (UNARA). 
The training was held at the Nakawa Renewable Energy Training Center, Kampala on 15 -19 July 2024. The training covered the topics of regulations and standards on environmental safety, equipment safety, end user safety and energy efficiency when using hydrocarbon refrigerants. Furthermore, it included many practical exercises on installation, maintenance, repair, leak testing, brazing, appliance testing and commissioning.

 

Donation of R600a freezers to national training centers

At the end of July 20204 12 brand new eco-friendly 300L freezers with R600a refrigerant were handed over to selected national institutions to facilitate practical training in the various national refrigeration and air conditioning training centers. The Bushenyi Technical College, Kasese Youth Polytechnic, NICWood TechHub in Kasese, Amelo Technical Institute and Ogolai Technical Institute were identified by NEMA as suitable recipients of the donations and will in future conduct training courses with the donated R600a freezers in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning technology.
