Ministry of Environment The mission of the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources (MERF) is to: enforce the state’s policies on the management of environmental and forest resources; elaborate rules on the protection of the environment, prevent pollution, natural hazards and disasters; monitor the implementation and compliance with international environmental conventions, as well as the provisions of the framework law on the environment, the forest code and the law on preventing risks from biotechnology; monitor the integration of environmental concerns into the various sectoral policies and national development strategies; develop means of support and supervision of populations and other stakeholders in the context of reforestation and forest management; inform transboundary police on the movements of chemical and dangerous substances. Bureau national ozone/National Ozone Unit The main objective of the project is to develop expertise and increase the technical capacity of national institutions to reduce and/or phase out the consumption of controlled substances, including ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases targeted by the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. GCI held a successful girls day for the Female RAC Technicians at the Nairobi Technical Training Institute. The girls interacted during the training on safe handling of Natural refrigerant and proved that, although it can be scary and occasionally difficult for women to enter a traditionally male-dominated field, it is still possible for them to excel and hold leadership positions in the RAC sector.

The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago acceded to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol for the Phase-out of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) in 1989, and operates under Article V(1) of the Montreal Protocol (MP). Trinidad and Tobago was the first country of the Caribbean Commonwealth to become a party to this multilateral environmental agreement and has ratified all amendments to the Protocol. The most recent ratification was to the Kigali Amendment to the Protocol in November 2017, the first country of the Caribbean Commonwealth and twenty first globally to do so. The National Ozone Unit (NOU) was established in August 1997, and currently resides within the Environmental Policy and Planning Division of the Ministry of Planning and Development. The programmes implemented by the National Ozone Unit involve a variety of valued stakeholders from the public and private sector as well as UN Implementing Agencies. To date the country has met and exceeded its national obligations under the Protocol. …
