The ONYX series are simple, integrated transcritical booster systems for medium (MT) and low temperature (LT) supermarket applications designed by Commercial Refrigeration Services (CRS) South Africa. The ONYX CO2 booster system makes use of parallel compression and ejectors, increasing energy efficiency by 25-35% and making CO2 a viable refrigerant choice even in high temperature regions. ONYX uses a two-stage compression cycle with a common condenser and liquid line for MT and LT applications. The two-stage design prevents significant energy losses as no big heat exchangers are required to condense the LT side. The integrated multi-temperature solution thus allows each ONYX unit to fully exploit the advantages of CO2. …

Since May 2018, the National Ozone Unit (NOU) of Grenada, in cooperation with GIZ Proklima, has been providing Green Cooling stickers to local appliance stores in order to promote the dissemination and use of natural refrigerants on the island state. The initiative created by both project partners supplies local appliance stores with eye-catching green magnetic stickers which are fixed on refrigeration systems with natural refrigerants. As a result, both the distributors and the customer alike are provided with a convenient tool for the promotion and distribution of natural refrigerants, and thus for ozone and climate protection. First piloted with the two companies Courts Grenada Limited (UNICOMER) and L. A. Purcel, the NOU aims to involve more retailers and suppliers and expand the initiative also to air conditioning technologies, with the goal of eventually making Grenada the first f-gas-free Caribbean island. …

In cooperation with Transfrig, the only South African manufacturer of transport refrigeration systems, GIZ South Africa has completed field testing of a R290 prototype refrigerated transport system in 2017. The R290 prototype has a global warming potential (GWP) of just 3, compared to 3922 of conventional R404 systems. The main aspects that were addressed during the design of the system were circuit optimization and integration of safety measures in order to achieve the same cooling capacities as R404 systems, whilst maximizing the coefficient of performance and reducing refrigerant charge. A leak identification feature was integrated into the system, whereby a suspected leak would result in a shut-down of the system. The product was developed under the project “Emission mitigation in the transport refrigeration sector through the introduction of innovative logistics and supply structures in South Africa”. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), with the South African Department of Trade and Industry as the leas executing agency. …

Introduced by Shecco in 2009, the Natural Voice is a global statement open to industry, associations, non-profit organizations and individuals supporting the potential of natural refrigerants in replacing potent greenhouse gases. At present, the Natural Voice has 109 signatories from a range of sectors and industries. The statement will be presented to national governments and international climate negotiators in the near future to build the basis for developing natural refrigerant initiatives around the world. The Natural Voice demands national governments to remove (inter)national trade barriers and to revise safety standards, codes and legislation that restrict the use of natural refrigerants without merit. Furthermore, it calls upon national governments to provide (non-) financial support for the research and promotion of natural refrigerants, and to facilitate the technology transfer from developed to developing countries. …

The Australian Refrigeration Association (ARA) is preparing its third submission to the Federal Department of the Environment regarding the Review of the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gases Management Act (OPSGG MA). In its previous 2 submissions, ARA was supported by over 70 of the leading cooling and refrigeration organizations. Now ARA is calling upon the public to show its support for the third submission. The submissions focuses on the reduced use of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. ARA estimates that the transition to natural refrigerants may reduce the cost of HVACR services in Australia by up to $10 B per annum, and reduce national GHG emissions by 7%. ARA is encouraging individuals to write a unique response about why they believe the Federal Department of Environment should prioritize this thematic. The key recommendations include: Banning the use of HFC’s in new vapour compression systems with a charge >5 kg by 2025. Compulsory use of low GWP refrigerants in all new vapour compression systems with a charge <0.150 kg by 2025. The introduction of a series of mechanisms to deliver minimum energy efficiency benchmarking, skills based refrigeration licensing (as opposed to refrigerant based licensing), alignment of WH&S legislation making state and federal WH&S legislation nationally consistent. …

Buenas prácticasTraining: Training programme for Iraqi refrigeration experts
Casale Monferrato, Italy, September 2016 – A group of Iraqi HVAC&R experts receive specialized training on the safe use natural refrigerants in domestic and commercial refrigeration. The training was hosted as a joint effort between Centro Studio Galileo and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and funded by the Multilateral Fund (MLF). During the week of theoretical and practical training, including field visits, the Iraqi experts gained the necessary skills and knowledge to support the introduction of hydrocarbon and low global warming potential refrigerants in the domestic and commercial refrigeration sectors. The training is part of Iraq’s national strategy for phasing out hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) while reducing dependency on high-GWP refrigerants. The participants were certified after successful completion of the course, such that they are now responsible for conducting training courses for local Iraqi engineers and technicians. Centro Studi Galileo and UNEP have worked together for over 10 years to build the capacity of technicians in developing countries and to support the introduction of local certification schemes for refrigeration technicians. …

November 2015: The Australian Refrigeration Association (ARA) hosted a two-day seminar in Sydney to explore the possible contributions of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVACR) industry in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Industrial, commercial and residential HVACR stakeholders were invited to an intensive two-day program highlighting the transition of the Australian HVACR industry to energy efficiency and emissions reduction. The ARA has estimated that Australia has the potential to reduce its HVACR energy bill and operating costs by over $10 B per annum and reducing national GHG emissions by 7% from the HVACR sector alone. The seminar addressed key issues impacting the Australian HVACR industry, providing stakeholders an opportunity to gain accurate information in the following areas: Exploring emerging HVACR energy efficient technologies and solutions Identifying and appreciating energy efficiency and GHG emissions reduction Quantifying and Recognising the value of integrated energy efficient engineering Recognising the regulatory requirements to shift to low GWP refrigerants Safety, risk and education – handling and implementing low GWP natural refrigerants …

Amman, October 2016: After 4 years of careful planning and developing, GIZ and the Jordanian Ministry of Environment (MoEnv) have successfully completed the solar cooling project at the German Jordanian University. The university in Amman now relies on a solar-powered cooling system that operates with a high reliability and environmental effectiveness, reducing electricity consumption for cooling by 15%. The project demonstrates the feasibility of environmentally-friendly technologies in Jordan, hereby promoting the reduction of CO2 emissions in line with the new Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Law, the phasing out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and Jordan’s scoping study on Green Economy. With several stakeholders from Germany and Jordan, the project promotes the cooperation between its different partners such as technology providers, German and Jordanian research institutions and Jordanian chiller manufacturers. …
